Whittled down from dozens of live recordings made using a micro freak synthesizer, a volca drum, and a volca bass, synced together using basic CV. A handful of those recordings were then sent to long-time friends and collaborators who live across Canada, in hopes of them contributing any type of vocal sound to be incorporated into the recordings. Then using a walkman, a speaker, and a recorder, their vocal parts were transplanted and re-amplified in various locations in the rural areas surrounding the barn where the songs were created.
Though not all of the vocal contributions received ended up on the official release, their efforts were remarkably creative and equally important to the process. Those in order of appearance are; Laura Da Silva, Carol Graham, Kira Daube, Michelle Kissinger, and Victoria Parker. Long time friend and musical counterpoint, Scott Brailey, now located in Germany, was employed with mastering the final mixes. Constellation Records alumni and Toronto musical aficionado, Craig Dunsmuir (Kanada 70) constructed a reduced remix of a song not included on the release, but was the first song recorded using the same basic gear and head space.
JFM has been at it since 2008, using an SP-404 sampler as a live instrument for cutting and pasting tracks together. Releasing tapes and CDs in limited editions on friends' record labels around Canada, and while living and working in downtown Toronto. A debut 12" LP on Halifax's Divorce Records in 2013 marked the first official JFM release and a relocation back to the East Coast. The period following this transition was a productive one; cassette EPs, compact discs of various sizes, a locked groove 7”, and a slew of b-side compilation contributions both digital and physical were being released on labels around the globe. This release on Cosmic Resonance marks an important departure from using any samples or sampler whatsoever and instead focuses on connecting with talented friends who have influenced and inspired the shape and direction of this EP.
